Berlin is the extendable table designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1905 and produced by Cassina. Scotland, Japan and Art Noveau come together in the work of the Scottish designer, a true forerunner of the Modernist movement. In a Scotland in the flower of industrial development, Mackintosh promotes a daily art, designed for an increasingly large but never massified audience, taken in all its facets and needs. The Scottish gothic taste, with its vertical lines, blends with the industrial needs of reproducibility and simplicity of assembly, to which Mackintosh adds a particular oriental taste, drawing on Japanese art. This contamination, due to the softening of the totalitarian Japanese regime at the beginning of the 20th century and the consequent diffusion of Japanese products in the major world ports, explains the softening and lightening of the lines, with the alternation of full and empty spaces , like the legs of the Berlin table. Even the taste for the particular joints becomes evident: the opening mechanism of the extensions is blocked by a piece of wood located in the central area of the longest side of the table, removed which can open one or both extensions, slightly lifting the top . The entire structure of the table is in natural cherry wood.
