Cesca Chair

Design

Cesca is born from the intersection of geometry, lightness, and experimentation with materials. Straight lines and delicate curves create a seemingly simple chair, in which each element fulfills a specific function. The most recognizable feature is the cantilevered structure, formed by a continuous tubular steel frame that supports the seat and backrest without the use of traditional rear legs. The shape exploits the elastic properties of steel, introducing a slight flexibility that contributes to the comfort of the seat. The metal structure also creates a refined contrast with the natural materials of the seat and backrest. It is precisely this juxtaposition between industrial production and traditional craftsmanship that makes Cesca one of the most emblematic projects of Breuer's research.

Bauhaus Identity

Marcel Breuer developed the design in 1928, shortly after leaving the Bauhaus, bringing to the chair the principles of rationality, industrial production, and material experimentation developed during his years at the German school. Breuer's research into tubular metal was also influenced by bicycle construction: lightweight, durable, and malleable, tubular steel offered the possibility of creating furniture with visually slender structures suitable for industrial production. Cesca represents one of the most mature expressions of this research: the technology is not hidden, but becomes an integral part of the chair's aesthetic. In the 1960s, the rights to the design were acquired by Gavina. After Knoll acquired the Italian company in 1968, Cesca joined the brand's collection, cementing its place among the international icons of modern design.

Materials and Dimensions

Cescha features a seat and backrest with a solid beech wood frame with woven cane inserts. The visual lightness of the weave interacts with the metal tubing and reinforces the contrast between traditional craftsmanship and industrial production that characterizes the entire project. Cesca is available in a Side Chair version without armrests and an Armchair configuration with armrests. The version without armrests maintains a particularly light and compact profile, making it ideal around a dining table or conference table. The version with armrests broadens the structure laterally and offers a more imposing presence, also suitable for study areas, meeting rooms, and spaces where the chair is used for longer periods. Both retain the characteristic cantilever structure and the original proportions of the design.
