Design

The design stems from the desire to preserve the transparency of glass while introducing a surface capable of actively interacting with light. The sphere is not perfectly smooth, but is traversed by an irregular pattern of reliefs and recesses. When the lamp is turned on, these variations modify the light propagation, producing reflections, refractions, and slight visual distortions. The result is a pendant lamp with elementary geometry yet a vibrant surface. The spherical shape maintains a pure and recognizable character, while the glasswork avoids any excessively uniform or industrial effect.

Blown glass by Bohemian glass masters

The shade is crafted from irregular, transparent blown glass by Bohemian glass masters, following a texture specifically developed by Catellani & Smith. The artisanal craftsmanship lends the surface a distinctive depth. Light passes through the glass without being completely shielded, but is fragmented by the irregularities and distributed through multiple points of refraction. The glass thus remains transparent and lightweight, while playing an active role in defining the lighting effect. The sphere's surface playfully recalls the texture of a golf ball. This reference is not translated into an applied decoration, but rather into a system of irregularities integrated directly into the glass. This process alters the relationship between light and surface: each relief intercepts the light beam differently and contributes to the creation of dynamic reflections.

Light and atmosphere

The LED source is placed inside the sphere and interacts directly with the glass texture. The emission is not perceived as a perfectly uniform beam: the surface irregularities create light variations that make the sphere appear deeper and more dynamic. Par 18 can therefore perform a dual function. On the one hand, it offers a warm and defined light source; on the other, it introduces a decorative presence capable of enlivening the environment through transparency and reflections.
