PietraForma Coffee Table

Design

PietraForma is born from Roberto Sironi's research into the ability of materials to preserve traces, memory, and meaning. The project does not seek to regularize the stone, but rather enhances its organic character through a large, thin top characterized by a deliberately irregular perimeter. The surface appears to derive from a natural process rather than a constructed geometry. Soft curves, slight recesses, and variations in profile distinguish the coffee table from any traditional rectangular, oval, or circular top. Beneath the stone, wooden legs introduce clean, architectural forms. The contrast between the free flow of the marble and the precision of the supports creates a visual balance in which nature and design maintain distinct yet complementary identities.

Materials

The top is made entirely of natural marble. The stone is crafted to maintain a dynamic and unconventional profile, making the coffee table recognizable from every vantage point. The mineral surface introduces a sense of solidity and permanence to the living space, while the visually restrained thickness lightens the composition. The top appears almost suspended above the wooden supports, generating a contrast between the physical weight of the stone and the perceptual lightness of the whole. The stone top is supported by wooden legs arranged seemingly freely beneath the surface. The supports do not follow a rigid symmetry: their size, orientation, and position vary, contributing to the architectural character of the composition. The regular geometry of the legs creates a counterpoint to the organic perimeter of the marble. Each support appears as a small, independent volume, yet the whole creates a stable and visually balanced base.

A balance between irregularity and precision

PietraForma is constructed through measured contrast. The top eschews regular geometry and maintains a free-form shape, while the legs adopt solid, vertical, and clearly defined forms. Stone evokes slow, layered natural processes; Wood, on the other hand, introduces references to construction, proportion, and human gesture. Neither material completely dominates the other. Despite its sculptural character, PietraForma fully retains its function as a coffee table. The large surface can accommodate books, trays, decorative objects, and everyday accessories. The irregular shape allows for the elements to be arranged without imposing a rigid composition, using the different areas of the top in relation to the surrounding seating. Its reduced height makes it particularly suitable for lounge sofas and low upholstered furniture, creating a horizontal and relaxed domestic landscape.
