The art of glass innovation by Fiam Italia

For over fifty years, Fiam Italia has been shaping glass and transforming it into sturdy and unexpected pieces of furniture. Thanks to research into the material and unique processing techniques, glass goes beyond transparency and is transformed with unprecedented colors and textures. Fiam Italia’s techniques include Fusion, a thermal treatment in which the glass deforms under the force of gravity and is shaped by the artisan, and DV-Glass®, a technique that involves combining strips of glass (including recycled glass) of various thicknesses and heights. The technique that has most defined Fiam Italia’s stylistic signature is Curvatura, which allows the glass sheet to be shaped into a three-dimensional form through a process that takes place between the solid and liquid states.

Fiam Italia’s craftsmanship has led to the creation of a range of unique and instantly recognizable furniture, from the iconic Onda pouf, which started it all, to large dining tables, bookcases, and storage systems.

Curves and transparency: Fiam Italia tables

Fiam’s vision for the dining room features tables where functionality and aesthetics blend with the elegance of glass. The transparencies and textures reflect light and illuminate the space, turning the object into the centerpiece while remaining completely in harmony with its surroundings.

In the Fiam Italia collection of dining tables, the designers interpret glass without any expressive limits, thanks to the artisans’ vast wealth of expertise. This is how pieces such as the Big Wave table by Ludovica + Roberto Palomba come to life, crafted using the DV Glass® process and featuring a base made of slabs with smoked stripes and a tempered, back-painted top, finished with Ecomalta or wood veneer. Also by the same designers is the Agos table with a painted metal base supporting an extralight glass top.

Among Fiam’s best-known designs is the Ray Plus extendable table by Bartoli Design, featuring a tempered glass top and curved glass legs, inspired by the precision of Rationalist architecture and defined by the contrast between the tension of the curves and the linearity of the top. Transparent glass also takes center stage in the LLT table by Benini and Gonzo, which is geometrically rigorous yet made intriguing by its transparency and exposed connecting elements, as well as in the distinctive Luxor table by Rodolfo Dordoni, featuring a unique base of open cylinders and a smoked or bronze tabletop.
