Foglio Wall Lamp

Design

Foglio translates an elementary gesture into a three-dimensional geometry. The metal surface appears to fold back on itself, forming two gentle lateral curves that conceal the light sources and define the silhouette of the wall fixture.

The design reflects Tobia Scarpa’s approach, which centers on the ability to achieve both identity and function through a few carefully calibrated elements.

This formal simplicity does not diminish the object’s presence; rather, the curved steel surface interacts with both the light and the wall, transforming Foglio into a graphic, sculptural element.

Lighting and functionality

Foglio combines different types of light emission:

- Direct light
- Indirect light
- Partially diffused light

The light sources are shielded by the metal structure, with light projected primarily upwards and downwards. This creates a soft glow on the wall while simultaneously contributing to the overall ambient lighting of the space.

The configuration, featuring two lamp holders, ensures that the light is distributed in a balanced way through both openings of the lamp.

Materials and construction

Foglio is built around an essential structure in which the metal serves both a technical and an aesthetic purpose.

The fixture includes:

- A wall mount made of pressed steel
- A diffuser made of pressed steel
- A powder-coated and polished surface
- Two lamp-holder supports
- Supports made of injection-molded white nylon

The steel-working process allows for the creation of the diffuser’s characteristic curves, while maintaining a continuous, clean surface.

A 1966 design by Tobia Scarpa

Designed in 1966, Foglio belongs to a generation of products in which Tobia Scarpa explores the relationship between form, material, and function through seemingly simple solutions.

The design concept stems from the image of a sheet of paper being folded and curved. This gesture simultaneously defines the lamp’s aesthetic, the shielding of the light sources, and the way light is projected into the space.

Its essential form—devoid of any superfluous elements—has allowed Foglio to retain a contemporary and easily recognizable presence over time.

Versatility and adaptability

Foglio can be used as wall lighting in living rooms, hallways, entryways, bedrooms, and transitional spaces.

Its dual light emission enhances the vertical surface upon which it is installed, making it an ideal choice when the wall itself is intended to serve as an active element of the lighting design.

Its compact geometry and minimalist language allow it to be used either individually or in a sequence along larger wall surfaces.
