Alessi juicer: design and functionality in an iconic object

Over time, industrial design has played a fundamental role in rethinking everyday objects, transforming them from simple functional tools to true works of art. Designers have not limited themselves to improving the ergonomics or efficiency of these objects, but have also wanted to give them an innovative aesthetic, capable of evoking emotions and enriching domestic environments.

This trend arises from the desire to break traditional patterns, creating products that combine form and function in a unique way. Among the most famous examples we can mention the Panton Chair by Verner Panton, the 9093 kettle by Alessi designed by Michael Graves, and the Juicy Salif, the citrus squeezer designed by Philippe Starck for Alessi, an icon of contemporary design.

Our journey into the world of design that has revolutionized everyday objects begins with Juicy Salif. With the experts at Ciat Design we will delve into the history of this iconic product, which we proudly display among our "bestsellers".

Juicy Salif: a revolutionary citrus squeezer

Among all the design objects, the Juicy Salif citrus squeezer by Alessi occupies a special place. Designed by Philippe Starck in 1990, this citrus squeezer is not just a kitchen utensil, but a true cult object, exhibited in the most prestigious museums of design and contemporary art.

Made of cast aluminum, Juicy Salif has a shape reminiscent of an alien creature or a stylized spider, with three slender legs supporting the grooved central body, designed to squeeze citrus fruits directly into the glass below.

The origin of a brilliant idea

Legend has it that Philippe Starck was inspired to design Juicy Salif while he was in a pizzeria on the Italian coast. He designed the concept on a napkin, imagining an object that was both sculptural and functional.

In detail, according to what he said, the idea came to him while he was eating a plate of calamari and realized how essential lemon was to enhance the flavor. It was then that, inspired by the shape of the calamari, he drew the first draft of the juicer directly on the paper placemat of the restaurant. This anecdote underlines how creativity can arise at any time and place, even in the most unexpected situations.

In several interviews, Starck said that his goal was not to create the best juicer in terms of functionality, but an object that could stimulate conversations and become an icon. In fact, design is not only used to improve daily life, but to bring poetry and surprise into domestic environments. We are therefore talking about Emotional Design, whose task is to invite each of us to reconsider everyday objects according to symbolic aspects.

Immediately welcomed with enthusiasm by Alessi, an Italian company leader in the design sector, which transformed it into reality. From the very beginning, the citrus squeezer generated debates and discussions: its avant-garde design won over many, but left puzzled those who were looking for a practical utensil only.

Form and function: a perfect balance?

One of the most discussed aspects of the Juicy Salif is its relationship between aesthetics and functionality. Despite its attractive shape, some criticize the fact that the juice can drip onto the lap instead of directly into the glass. However, this small inconvenience has not prevented the product from becoming an icon of modern design.

Starck himself stated that the goal of the Juicy Salif was not functional perfection, but rather to stimulate a conversation. In particular, the designer stated that: “the way in which this micro-sculpture lets our imagination run wild” represents the raison d’être of this iconic object. In this context, the juicer becomes an experience more than a simple tool.

A collector's item

More than 30 years after its creation, Juicy Salif continues to be an object of desire for design lovers. Its presence in kitchens and showrooms is not only linked to its practical function, but also to its ability to to decorate with style.

Alessi has released several special editions of the juicer, including bronze and gold-plated versions, making it a collector's item coveted by lovers of contemporary design.

Furthermore, as a further curiosity, the revolutionary and visionary design of Juicy Salif has made this juicer the protagonist of several design exhibitions or that focus on the work of Philippe Starck. But not only that, as Juicy is exhibited in several permanent collections. Among the most prestigious include:

  • Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York
  • Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York
  • Victoria and Albert Museum in London
  • Triennale Design Museum in Milan
  • Musée des Arts Décoratifs of Paris
