The Basilan chair by Tacchini, designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa in the 1970s, embodies a radical exploration of the relationship between material, structure, and craftsmanship. A modular rattan cage simultaneously forms the legs, seat, and backrest, while leather bindings and metal joints highlight the connections with almost architectural precision. A comfortable padded cushion, upholstered in fabric or leather, is included.

Design
Basilan represents one of the most original moments in Afra and Tobia Scarpa's research into chair design. The project abandons the traditional distinction between supporting structure and decorative surface: the weave simultaneously serves as support, covering, and formal definition. The chair is constructed from rectangular rattan modules arranged vertically and horizontally. The side frames form the legs and support the seat, while the rear panel extends upward to define a slender backrest. The regular repetition of the weave creates a recognizable graphic rhythm. The design remains light and permeable to the eye, yet at the same time conveys stability thanks to the overlapping elements and the clarity of the connections.
A modular rattan cage
The Basilan structure can be read as a small architectural structure created through woven frames. Each panel contributes to the overall construction of the chair, without assuming a purely ornamental role. The rattan, with a matte chocolate finish, is used for its structural qualities, the flexibility of its fibers, and its natural aptitude for manual workmanship. The quadrangular weave allows light and air to pass through, visually lightening an otherwise rigorous geometry. The woven surfaces retain the memory of the artisanal gesture. The slight variations in the material and workmanship reveal the intervention of the hands that have curved, arranged, and tied it, transforming the chair into a tactile and intensely material object.
Leather bindings and metal joints
The rattan structure is enriched with braiding and leather bindings, which consolidate the meeting points and introduce a further level of detail. Leather creates a subtle contrast with the plant fiber: both materials are natural and designed to acquire character over time, but they have different textures and workmanship. The bindings remain visible and directly contribute to the chair's aesthetic. Metal joints reinforce the structural connections and demonstrate the combination of craftsmanship and technical precision. Rattan, leather, and metal are not fused into a uniform surface, but maintain clearly identifiable identities and functions.
Comfort and Padded Cushion
The rattan weave supports the body while maintaining a natural elasticity, while the high backrest offers ample, well-defined support. The proposed configuration comes complete with a padded cushion, which softens contact with the seat and introduces a textile component within the woven structure. The upholstery can be chosen in fabric or leather, coordinating it with the rattan shade or creating a more striking color contrast. The cushion softens the rigidity of the modular cage without obscuring its construction. The structure remains the protagonist, while the padded element adds comfort and expands the possibilities for customization.
