Back-Wing Chair

Design

Back-Wing is born from Patricia Urquiola's ability to reinterpret traditional typologies through dynamic forms and unexpected construction solutions. The chair transcends the usual separation between frame, seat, and armrests, transforming them into parts of a fluid and coherent composition. The solid wood legs and crosspieces feature substantial sections, conveying stability and energy. This rigorous structure supports the padded seat and thin backrest, shaped like a flexible surface that envelops the body.

Structure and Seat

The frame is one of the central elements of the project and demonstrates the expertise of Cassina's carpentry. The legs and crosspieces are made entirely of solid wood, crafted into broad, geometrically defined sections. The construction remains clearly visible and gives the chair a robust character without weighing down its overall appearance. The solidity of the wooden frame is balanced by visually thin padded surfaces. The seat and backrest utilize a rigid polyurethane frame complemented by CFC-free polyurethane foam padding. This construction allows for slim, well-defined profiles, while maintaining comfortable support during daily use.

The Contrast Between Thickness and Lightness

Back-Wing's identity is based on the contrast between seemingly opposite elements. The wooden frame uses bold sections and conveys solidity, while the seat and backrest appear thin, almost as if they were folded sheets of paper suspended from the frame. This contrast makes the chair dynamic from every perspective. Seen from the front, the enveloping backrest defines a welcoming shape; from the side, the curvature of the padded surfaces highlights the lightness of the profile. The structure is not hidden by the upholstery, but remains the protagonist, interacting with the softer parts through a precise and legible composition.

Versatility and Ambience

In the dining room, Back-Wing can be used around the entire table or placed just at the ends, alternating with the armless version. The natural ash frame easily blends into bright interiors and compositions featuring light stone, natural fabrics, and neutral colors. Black ash creates a more assertive and contemporary look, while Canaletto walnut pairs well with marble, leather, and warm-toned metals. Back-Wing can also accompany a desk or meeting table, offering a welcoming yet visually light seat. Its quality construction and customizable upholstery options also make it suitable for restaurants, meeting rooms, boutiques, and refined hospitality spaces.
