Muecke Armchair

Design

Jonathan Muecke develops his designs starting from the intrinsic logic of materials. In the case of the Muecke Chair, the starting point is wood and how it can be transformed without obscuring its natural characteristics. The structure is reduced to a system of clearly recognizable cylindrical elements. Legs, crosspieces, uprights, and armrests share the same geometric principle, creating a coherent language in which each component seems to derive naturally from the previous, with the armrests laterally extending the structure without altering its simplicity. The result is a rigorous and material chair, ideally positioned between furniture, architecture, and sculpture.

Wood as a Design Element

The Muecke Chair was born from the desire to enhance all the visible characteristics of wood, including the end grain, which is often hidden in traditional manufacturing. Muecke transforms the elements into cylindrical pieces, eliminating the traditional distinction between the face and edge of the wood. The end sections intentionally remain visible and become part of the design. To keep the end grain visible, the cylindrical elements are not simply superimposed on the same plane. Instead, the pieces intersect on adjacent planes and are connected at their intersections with floating tenons, thus making the joint an integral part of the chair's aesthetic. This choice gives the chair an authentic and material character: the structure, grain, and construction are clearly displayed, without resorting to superfluous elements.

Comfort and Proportions

The absence of padding allows the wood to take center stage and gives the armchair a minimalist character. The slight curvature of the backrest follows the body's position, while the armrests offer additional support. The compact proportions allow the Muecke Armchair to be used around a dining table without creating excessive bulk.
