The Theia floor lamp by Marset, designed by Mathias Hahn in 2016, explores the relationship between light and shadow through essential geometry and highly intuitive movement. Two hemispheres, one horizontal and one vertical, intersect to create a sculptural light source. By gently rotating the lamp around its central axis, Theia completely changes its function and atmosphere: it can be oriented toward the user as a reading lamp or aimed at a wall or object to produce a softer, more enveloping indirect light.

Design
The Theia design begins with elementary geometric shapes: two hemispheres arranged perpendicularly and overlapping along a central axis. The simplicity of the construction, however, conceals an extremely dynamic lighting system. One of the two hemispheres is opaque, while the other introduces transparency and depth. Their interaction allows light to be simultaneously projected, reflected, and absorbed by the surrounding surfaces. The lamp's form is therefore inseparable from its function. Each component contributes directly to the lighting effect, and the rotation of the body becomes an integral part of the user experience.
Two luminous faces
Theia was designed to offer two different ways of illuminating with a single gesture. By orienting the luminous body toward the user, the light source becomes more present, and the lamp can be used as a reading light next to an armchair, sofa, or chaise longue. By rotating the opaque hemisphere toward the viewer, the light is directed toward a wall, a piece of furniture, or an architectural element. The emission thus becomes indirect and contributes to a softer, more relaxing atmosphere. By orienting the diffuser toward the user, Theia focuses the light more directly on the desired area, creating functional lighting for reading or performing activities that require a nearby source. By rotating the body in the opposite direction, Theia can use a wall as a reflective surface. This dual possibility makes Theia particularly versatile: during reading, it can perform a more specific function, while during moments of relaxation, it can transform into an atmospheric light source.
Structure and materials
The light fixture combines materials with different optical properties. The vertical hemisphere is made of lacquered turned metal with a white interior surface. Its complete opacity allows for both screening and directing the light. This part is combined with a transparent, smoked thermoformed methacrylate screen, which adds lightness and depth to the volume. The base and stem are made of lacquered iron, while the heat sink is made of lacquered aluminum and integrates the lamp's control panel.
Dimmable LED Light Source
Theia is equipped with an 8.2W LED light source with a built-in dimmer. The adjustable intensity completes the orientation system: not only does the direction of the light change, but also the amount of emission required. With a higher intensity and the diffuser facing the user, Theia can effectively function as a reading lamp. By reducing the brightness and orienting the body towards a wall, it becomes a more discreet and enveloping source of atmosphere.
