Founded in Copenhagen in the late 19th century, Louis Poulsen is considered one of the pioneers of modern lighting. An important legacy and a design philosophy that emerged in the early 1920s from the collaboration with Poul Henningsen and his scientific approach to lighting. The first product to result from this collaboration was the revolutionary PH lamp, designed to provide comfortable, glare-free light thanks to its three-shade system.
Another designer that helped shape Louis Poulsen’s aesthetic was Verner Panton, with whom the company began collaborating in the late 1960s. This partnership gave rise to one of the Danish brand’s most iconic designs: the Panthella lamp, featuring the organic shapes and vibrant colors typically associated with Panton’s work. Together with Arne Jacobsen, Louis Poulsen created minimalist yet equally famous lamps, such as the AJ series.
For 100 years, the PH lamp series has set the standard for efficient lighting, thanks to its ability to solve the problem of glare caused by exposed light bulbs.
The uniqueness of the lamps designed by Poul Henningsen begins with their names: each model is identified by the initials “PH” followed by a number, for example, PH 4/3, where the first number indicates the diameter of the upper shade in decimeters and the second number indicates the size of the lower shades. Thus, a PH 4/4 lamp will have shades of equal diameter, while those with different dimensions will provide downward-directed light.
Among Scandinavian interior design lamps, the Louis Poulsen PH5 pendant lamp is one of the most sought-after pieces. It was developed in the late 1950s to respond to changes in incandescent bulbs, adapting the three-shade system to accommodate all types of bulbs. It was a cutting-edge lamp, originally featuring blue and red shades to enhance the color of the light, which were later removed as bulb technology evolved.
