Guardian of Italian Design

Azucena is a brand founded in 1947 by Luigi Caccia Dominioni, Ignazio Gardella, and Corrado Corradi Dell’Acqua, with the aim of bringing together, on the one hand, the furnishings created for the buildings they designed and, on the other, producing individual pieces of furniture to be included in their collections.

This prestigious collection of furnishings was relaunched in 2018 by B&B Italia, which acquired the brand to preserve and revitalize an important part of Italian design heritage. The Azucena collection, therefore, consists of modern furniture and lamps designed in the late 1940s, characterized by distinctive features such as an elegant combination of curved and straight lines, pairings of steel and velvet, bourgeois style, and a contemporary approach. A mix to which architect and urban planner Dominioni never failed to add a light and surreal touch.

The refinement of simplicity: Azucena lamps

The Azucena lamps designed by Luigi Caccia Dominioni are a clear example of how a simple, well-designed object can become a precious and sophisticated piece. The brand’s lighting stands out for its minimalism, in which every form serves a function: base, stem, and shade. It is inspiration that creates meaning, that touch of irony that completes the object’s character.

The Monachella floor lamp owes its name to the headdress worn by nuns, but above all to the shape and tilt of the shade, which immediately evokes a modest demeanor and the typical downward gaze. A reading lamp that elegantly represents and pays homage to its patron: it was created in 1953 for the residence of a religious order designed by Dominioni, the Convent and Institute of the Blessed Virgin of Sorrows in Milan.

The same tendency to create a narrative with just a few essential lines is seen in the Base Ghisa table lamp, which owes its name to one of its structural elements but also echoes the affectionate nickname given to Milan’s traffic police for their headgear. Thanks to the solidity of the materials, combined with a play of angles and inclinations, the lamp has a light and floating appearance. The Azucena Base di Ghisa lamp is a discreet lamp, which remains almost hidden in a dark room, yet is capable of providing a wide beam of light.

The Imbuto floor lamp is another design by Luigi Caccia Dominioni that combines simplicity with exceptionality. The lampshade is an upward-facing metal cone supported by a slender stem. The result is a wide cone of light that illuminates the room and lends it an elegant atmosphere, whether the setting is classic or contemporary.
