Richard Schultz was born on 1926 in Lafayette, in the United States. After studying mechanical engineering and design at lowa State University and the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, Schultz started his collaboration with Knoll International in 1951. He later founded Richard Schultz Designs in Palm, Pennsylvania, with his son, Peter in 1992. The company and brand continue today.
