The Danish company’s primary goal for a century has been to shape light, because the way it spreads determines the atmosphere of spaces and influences the feelings of those who inhabit them. This philosophy originated in 1926 through a collaboration with Poul Henningsen, who developed the three-shade system that has become a hallmark of Louis Poulsen lamps: this innovation made it possible to eliminate glare and create a more comfortable lighting experience.
Even today, Louis Poulsen lighting fixtures represent excellence, thanks to their ability to shape a space with light and make it even more welcoming.
The collaboration with Poul Henningsen gave rise to true icons of Nordic design, appreciated for their functionality and distinctive shapes. The pendant lamps of the PH series have made their anti-glare shade system a distinctive feature that uniquely defines their appearance.
The PH 5 chandelier was developed in 1958 to adapt the three-shade system to new light bulbs. Its structure directs the light downward, filtering a soft and comfortable glow, perfect for the dining area. The shades are made of curved, lacquered aluminum. Additionally, Poul Henningsen’s three-shade system has given rise to a range of over 30 lamps, designed for various residential and practical needs: table, floor, and pendant lamps in the PH series are available in different sizes, colors, and finishes, with shades of various sizes.

Other famous designer pendant lamps are based on the same anti-glare shade system: the PH Artichoke and PH Snowball. The PH Artichoke pendant lamp owes its name to its distinctive spherical shape featuring 72 metal “leaves” arranged in 6 rows, a system that diffuses light evenly. In addition to its functional efficiency, it boasts a cutting-edge design that illuminates and defines the living room, much like a work of art. The PH Snowball pendant lamp features 8 aluminum shades, with a glossy finish on top and a matte finish on the bottom: this allows the light to diffuse evenly and gently from the center, following Louis Poulsen’s philosophy.
The choice of a suspension lamp depends on your needs and the style you want to create in your spaces. With Louis Poulsen suspension lamps, you can choose pairs of smaller lamps to hang above the dining table, while in the living room you can position your pendant lamp higher up for a diffused effect or lower down, for example suspended above a coffee table for a more intimate atmosphere.
